Bond & Stitch Co: How to Care for Your Knitted Garments and Accessories

Knitwear, with its intricate textures and cozy warmth, holds a special place in our hearts (and wardrobes!). Whether it's a cherished sweater, a favorite scarf, or a luxurious throw pillow, proper care ensures these knitted treasures remain beautiful and last for years to come.

At Bond & Stitch, we're passionate about quality craftsmanship. That's why we want to share our expert tips on how to care for your knitted garments and accessories, keeping them looking their best and feeling luxuriously soft.

Washing:

  • Check the Label: Always start by checking the care label on your garment. It will provide specific instructions based on the fiber content and construction.
  • Hand Washing: For delicate knits or items with special embellishments, hand washing is the gentlest option. Use cool water and a mild detergent specifically designed for wool or delicates. Gently swirl the garment in the water, avoid harsh scrubbing, and rinse thoroughly.
  • Machine Washing: If the care label permits, some knitwear can be machine washed. Choose a gentle cycle with cool water and place the item in a mesh laundry bag to protect it from snagging.
  • Wool Wash: For wool and cashmere items, using a wool wash helps maintain the fibers' natural lanolin, keeping them soft and supple.

Drying:

  • Avoid the Dryer: Heat is the enemy of knitwear! Never put your knitted garments in the dryer, as it can cause shrinkage, felting, and damage to the fibers.
  • Reshape and Dry Flat: After washing, gently reshape the garment and lay it flat on a clean, dry towel. Avoid hanging, as this can stretch the knit.
  • Air Dry: Allow the garment to air dry completely, turning it periodically to ensure even drying.

Storing:

  • Fold, Don't Hang: Hanging can distort the shape of knitted garments, especially heavier sweaters. Fold them neatly and store them in a drawer or on a shelf.
  • Cedar Protection: To prevent moth damage, store knitwear with cedar blocks or sachets.
  • Clean Before Storing: Always clean your knitwear before storing it for an extended period to prevent stains from setting in.

Additional Tips:

  • Pilling: Pilling is a natural occurrence with knitwear. Use a fabric shaver or a sweater comb to gently remove pills.
  • Snags: If you snag your knitwear, don't pull on the yarn! Gently pull the snag through to the wrong side of the fabric using a crochet hook or a similar tool.
  • Stains: Treat stains promptly with a stain remover specifically designed for delicate fabrics.
